My Favorite Records of 2011
These are not in any particular order, but rather in order of softest to loudest.
Last - The Unthanks
This whole album is stunning. This gem was hidden in this Metal Sucks Best of 2011 as Chosen by the Artists Themselves list. I immediately listened to the whole album beginning to end.
Helplessness Blues - Fleet Foxes

Stephen Colbert on CNN’s firing of approximately 50 journalists after the network completed a study on the quality of user generated content it was receiving via platforms such as iReport.
Colbert nails it. You savvy kids and your social tumblin’ are gonna be the death of us all.

“The reality is that women are treated differently by society for exactly the same reason that children and the mentally handicapped are treated differently. It’s just easier this way for everyone. You don’t argue with a four-year old about why he shouldn’t eat candy for dinner. You don’t punch a mentally handicapped guy even if he punches you first. And you don’t argue when a women...

How Dangerous is Nuclear Power?
Chernobyl is generally regarded as the worst disaster of the nuclear age. According to the 20-year report by the WHO, 50 people died as a direct result of radiation exposure—most of whom were rescue workers. 4,000 more will die prematurely due to their exposure. How the Sequels Ruined Star Wars
I recently bought the first three Star Wars movies on DVD. Having had time to watch the original three movies over the last 4 weeks, I think I can say that it wasn’t the prequels that ruined Star Wars; it was the sequels. That is, there never should have been The Empire Strikes Back and there definitely should not have been a Return of the Jedi. I know it’s generally agreed that...
